2014 SHAMUS AWARD WINNER

Tea with two spinsters thrusts 1930s private investigator Maggie Sullivan into an explosive mix of murder, political rivalries and family secrets. Pursuing their case means risking not only her life, but her detective license.

The Vanhorn sisters want her to learn the fate of their father, who vanished more than a quarter century earlier in Dayton, Ohio’s, catastrophic 1913 flood. They believe he was murdered. They think they know the killer. But before Maggie can question the suspect, he winds up dead.

With a nip of gin to cheer her and a Smith & Wesson for company, Maggie follows a trail all but obliterated by time. It leads her to a local politician with bigger ambitions — and possibly secrets to hide. It takes her into dime stores, cheap hotels, and a violent ambush by men wearing brass knuckles.

A determined cop wages a wily campaign to win her affections. A rag-tag newsboy pushes to be her assistant. As crimes of the past explode in the present, Maggie fights foes who must destroy her to destroy each other.

Slide into the passenger seat of Maggie’s DeSoto for an action-packed ride through a story filled with the atmosphere of early 20th century America and well-drawn characters. See why fans of this historical mystery series have dubbed the one-of-a-kind detective at its center “Sam Spade in a Skirt”.

Don't Dare a Dame Maggie Sullivan Mysteries Book 3 edition by M Ruth Myers Literature Fiction eBooks

I started out reading The Whiskey Tide and enjoyed it so much, I searched for other M. Ruth Myers books. Now I am hooked on her Maggie Sulllivan series. Unlike some series, the quality is not declining as she writes more books. I enjoy reading about the thirties when my mom was a young woman. You do not find many books written during that time period. The characters are different and interesting and I enjoy a good mystery. The writing is clean and there are not steamy scenes. Just like an old fashioned movie from the thirties. I hope she writes more books like this.

Don't Dare a Dame Maggie Sullivan Mysteries Book 3 edition by M Ruth Myers Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I can't say enough good things about the book. Maggie was at her best. I love a smart, wise cracking girl detective, who acts like a real person. She has normal friends, she makes mistakes, she works hard to do the right thing.

She is kind to good people and tough on the bad guys.

Don't know why she is keeping Mick Connelly at arms length.

In this story she's helping two older sisters find out what happened to their dad 26 years before. It turns out that her investigation kicks up more that a few hornets nests.

It's a wild ride. I highly recommend it if you're looking for a fun and exciting story to read.
It is 1939 in Dayton, Ohio, and Maggie Sullivan, private investigator, has been hired by two spinster sisters, Corrine and Isobel Vanhorn, to find out what happened to their father who disappeared in the great flood of 1913. He had left the house to go to the pharmacy for some medicine and was never seen again. Many people drowned in the flood. Others died in the fires that accompanied it. But the sisters believed he had been murdered.
One of the sisters had just gotten possession of the family house following their mother’s death, raising a dispute between her and at least one of her brothers and stepbrothers and her stepfather. Maggie sets out to learn more about what had happened twenty five years previously in an area that looked totally different and from people who had died, moved, or couldn’t remember. She immediately realized some people were lying to her and knew more than they would admit. “But even lies yield grains of something useful if you sift them carefully enough.”
Within a few days, there is another death (Suicide? Murder?), one of the sisters is kidnapped, and Maggie is assaulted.
The book is a fast-read with a good story line. M. Ruth Myers’s descriptions make it easy to actually visualize the scenes and understand the times (“The shiny pink of her lips had come from a tube, but she didn’t look cheap, just up-to-date and fresh and eager.”
It includes the typical sassy wit found in the previous books in the series “Listen, you dope, you need to come back later,” the woman who yanked the door open said in a rush.” “Gee, people usually get to know me before they call me a dope.”
My main criticism is the repetition of information as Maggie reviews what she knows.
I’ve read all the books in the series and enjoyed them.
This is one of the very few free EBooks I've read that was up to par with a book bought, or borrowed from the library. There were few, if any, typos or mistakes, and it was well written and kept my interest. I occasionally had a difficult time keeping all the characters' names straight, but that may have been because I only read for fifteen or twenty minutes at night before sleeping, so it took a long time to get through it. The author did a good job keeping the flavor and phraseology of the noire detective novels. I also appreciated it was clean and almost free of profanity. Just a couple of expletives in tense situations. If you like old fashioned detective novels, you'll like this one!
Sam Spade, I mean Maggie Sullivan is a delightful gutsy old-school gumshoe dick, I mean dame, who is a super sleuth in a rough and tumble man's world of ace detectives. No Miss Marple, Miss Maggie is a new breed of sleuth with plenty of moxie; she can slug it out with the best of them--at the risk of almost losing her PI license.

The story is set during the Depression era, but Miss Maggie investigates a cold case--a man's disappearance during the 1913 flood that ravaged Dayton, Ohio. Many unrelated story threads converge when the mystery of the two spinsters' missing father is finally solved. A thoroughly enjoyable read by a well crafted story by a writer who knows her way around the business end of a vintage typewriter. If you like brusque 1930s style hard-boiled potboilers, you'll enjoy this book.

OK, so the story might be more believable if it was dude gumshoe vs. a dame, the dialogue and action is pretty predictable, but it's still an engaging read. Don't Dare a Dame is the third story in the Maggie Sullivan series. I'll be keeping an eye out for more of M. Ruth Myers' books. I also highly recommend her full length book, Whiskey Tide. Three point five stars, if I could award it. But I'm feeling generous after reading a spate of ho-hum ebooks.
Maggie Sullivan, living in the 1930s, is a private investigator and a delightful character. This tale involves a group of people who are determined to do one another in over an inheritance and Maggie is not about to let that happen. Finding a need to protect two elderly sisters and to dig up the circumstances of a fatality (was it an accident or murder?) that occurred 20 years previously, Maggie finds herself repeatedly in trouble. But Maggie prevails!
This is a quick and enjoyable read.
